November 1st, 2008 – Meriah Caswell

Meriah Caswell, Currently Commanding the USS Indianapolis has had a colorful career and private life. Meriah was born on Earth to Lieutenant Commander Hanson Caswell and Veronica Caswell, a Starfleet Staff Officer that was stationed on Earth for the first few years of her life. She enjoyed a close knit family life, as her father was not deployed for years at a time on a Starship. Her first taste of life in space came in 2263 when her father was posted to Starbase 11. This was also Meriah’s first exposure to a truly alien environment.

Meriah was an exceptionally bright student during her primary education years. She managed to take a love in history, and Starfleet History as she progressed through her studies on Starbase 11. It was also her that her father was assigned to the USS Kongo for five years starting in 2268. Meriah decided as she entered her senior year in High school in 2274, that she was going to enter Starfleet Command.

It was during her time at the Academy that Meriah fell in love with a fellow Academy classmate, Benny Marko. The two were inseparable during their final two years at the Academy, they may have even gotten married had Marko not been killed during a training accident during the cadet cruise on board the USS Republic. Meriah was devastated with the loss of her true love, and nearly washed out of the Academy following her Cadet Cruise however her father talked her into staying the course, and she ended up graduating in the 72 percentile.

Her first posting was as a Tactical Officer on board the Okinawa Class Frigate USS Iwo Jima. The Iwo Jima was assigned to patrol the Klingon Border in 2279 to 2281. Meriah rose through the ranks reaching Lieutenant by the time her two year tour on board the Iwo Jima was completed. The tour was largely uneventful, however the Iwo Jima was involved in a couple border skirmishes and disputes with the Klingons, which allowed Meriah to hone her tactical skills.

In 2293 she was recalled back to Earth to take command of the USS Oberon, an Miranda Class Vessel. This was Meriah’s first true taste of Command and it both excited and scared her stiff. She was eager to find out what new challenges and tribulations would await her in this new posting. During her first mission as the Commanding Officer of the USS Oberon, the ship was severely damaged by a saboteur of unknown origin. She ordered that the ship alter its route towards the crossroads and head for Starbase 12 for repairs. While enroute to Starbase 12, Meriah received a communication from Commodore Schuyler informing her that Starfleet Command was removing her from her command of the Oberon, and transferring her to the newly commissioned USS Indianapolis that would arrive at Starbase 12 approximately 48 hours after the Oberon's arrival at SB12.
